Non-violent resistance programme

The Non‑Violent Resistance (NVR) programme is for parents and carers of children and young people aged 9 to 17 years.

Research suggests that this programme is particularly helpful for parents of neurodivergent children who struggle with emotional regulation, impulsivity, anxiety or rigid thinking, and may display aggression or intense behaviours as a result.

Non‑violent Resistance is a 10‑week, intensive, evidence‑informed programme that supports parents to respond safely and calmly to aggressive, destructive, risk‑taking or coercive behaviours. These behaviours can include:

  • physical violence
  • emotional abuse
  • property damage
  • threats
  • controlling patterns that cause fear or distress at home

Rather than focusing on punishment, NVR teaches parents how to de‑escalate conflict, stay emotionally regulated and increase their 'parental presence' so that young people experience calm, consistent boundaries. It is a non‑punitive, relationship‑based approach rooted in the principles of peaceful resistance.

Why NVR is helpful

There is growing evidence that NVR can reduce:

  • parental stress
  • feelings of helplessness and fear
  • hostile, escalating patterns between parents and young people

It can also increase:

  • parents' confidence and sense of control
  • safer, calmer family relationships
  • effective responses to violence or controlling behaviour

What parents learn

Throughout the programme, parents are supported to:

  • stay calm and avoid escalating conflict
  • respond safely to violent or harmful behaviour
  • set clear, consistent boundaries
  • build a stronger, more connected relationship with their young person
  • recruit supportive adults (extended family, school and friends) to create a wider safety network
  • take practical, non‑violent actions to interrupt conflict cycles
  • look after their own wellbeing and reduce stress

This approach helps shift the dynamic from fear and crisis to calm, safety and connection.
