Book to visit a recycling centre

A booking system for our three recycling centres is being introduced in early 2026.

We were planning to introduce this in the autumn of 2025, but we have decided to delay the introduction. This is because of the significant changes to the recycling and waste service this year.

The delay will mean that queues are more likely over the busy Christmas period, however it will reduce the risk of introducing a new system so close to the holidays.

The delay means you can visit our recycling centres to take excess recycling and waste over the festive period without booking.

The online booking system will be introduced in stages. The first will be Weston-super-Mare, followed by Backwell and Portishead.

Why we are introducing a booking system

The system is being introduced to make visits faster, safer and more efficient.

It will:

  • make visits easier
  • ensure the sites are working efficiently
  • reduce queues
  • cut carbon emissions from idling vehicles
  • reduce unauthorised use by people from outside the area
  • manage commercial and DIY waste correctly
  • help to manage sites safely during periods of repairs
  • simplify vehicle permits for those who need them

This follows on from neighbouring authorities, who all have successful booking systems in place.

How you can book

You will be able to make a booking:

  • online - if you do not have access to the internet, friends and family members will be able to book for you
  • over the phone - although the online option will be quicker and easier

The booking system will be on the website and accessible via the North Somerset Council app.

We will update this page with more details nearer to launch time.

Permit holders

If you currently have a permit to visit to our recycling centres, we will contact you before the new system is launched. We will let you know how permits will work in the new system.
