Employing a personal assistant

Employing a Personal Assistant (PA) can give you greater control over how your needs are met and a more flexible way of managing your support.

If you receive a direct payment you can use it to employ a personal assistant (PA), an agency or other services that will meet your outcomes. You can also use a combination of any of the options.

Please see our factsheet for more information.

Employing family and friends for your care

Employing a family member or a friend can work well for some people but there are things to consider.  Please see our guide for more details about what to consider.

How to find a PA

You can use our online personal assistant register if you are looking for someone to work for you as a PA.

Please note - we have not vetted anyone on the PA register and cannot accept any liability for the accuracy of information provided by individual PAs.

We recommend that you interview people and check references and qualifications. We strongly recommend you carry out DBS checks on all PAs, whether or not you recruit through the PA register.

We may remove any entries at our discretion.
