Unlicensed family entertainment centres

Unlicensed family entertainment centres are premises which are used for making gaming machines available.

We cannot grant a permit for an entire shopping centre or bowling alley.

Family entertainment centres are commonly located at:

  • seaside resorts
  • airports
  • motorway service stations

They cater for families (for example, amusement arcades). Unlicensed family entertainment centres can offer only category D machines. You must also have a gaming machine permit.

If you are running an unlicensed family entertainment centre, you will need a permit from us.

The application for a permit can only be made by a person who is aged 18 or older and occupies or plans to occupy the premises.

Applications for a permit cannot be made if a premises licence is in effect for the same premises.

Policy

Please read our statement of principles before you apply.

Fees

Details of the fees related to this licence can be found in our fees and charges booklet.

How to apply

Your application must include:

  • the application fee
  • a plan of the premises that clearly shows the area where gaming machines would be used

Please send your completed application forms to us via email.

After you've applied

Once we receive your application we will consult with Avon and Somerset police. They will have 14 days to make any comments about your application.

We will either grant or refuse your application for a permit. The permit will last for 10 years unless it lapses or is surrendered.

If we reject your application, we will provide our reasons for doing so. You will be able to make representations against our decision.
