Speeding

We set the speed limits on the roads across the district. The police are responsible for enforcing them.

Before we set a limit we take different factors into account. This includes

  • the number of recorded collisions in the area and;
  • how fast drivers are travelling

Village speed limits

We are looking to set up a 30mph speed limit in all our villages. We are also looking to install 20mph speed limits in the centre of villages. This is where pedestrian and cycling traffic is at its highest.

We aim to promote safer driving campaigns to help motorists understand the impact of speed. We want to achieve safer driving by consensus rather than enforcement.

We use a range of facilities to keep vehicle speeds down including

  • vehicle activated signs
  • road humps
  • kerb buildouts
  • signage and lining

We introduce these traffic calming measures to areas where we need to slow down vehicles for safety reasons.

How to request a speed limit change

If you think there is a strong case for traffic calming in your area, please contact your local Town or Parish Council or Local Councillor and make a request.

You can find the contact details for your local town and parish councillor on our dedicated webpage.
