Asbestos

The responsibility for managing asbestos rests with anyone who:

  • owns the building that contains it
  • is responsible for the building through a contract or tenancy agreement
  • controls the building even if there is no formal contract
  • is responsible for maintenance or repairs in a multi-occupied building

If asbestos is found in a building the responsible person should:

  • carry out a risk assessment
  • prepare and implement a plan to survey, monitor, maintain or remove the materials
  • provide information for anyone carrying out work on the building
  • review and revise the plan regularly

The Health and Safety Executive provides advice on asbestos surveys and free online training.
