Staying safe on Weston seafront

If you are looking for information about Marine Lake, please see our dedicated webpage.

Birnbeck Pier and Island

Together with the RNLI, we have plans in place to restore the pier. This will allow the public to visit and for the RNLI to have a lifeboat station on the island again.

For more information, see our dedicated website section.

Birnbeck Pier and Island are unsafe and in danger of collapse. This includes the buildings and structures on the landside and on the island.

Do not attempt to cross from the mainland to the island at low tide. There is no access to Birnbeck Island and this stretch of coastline has fast moving tides.

Knightstone Island

We have become aware of people ‘tombstoning’ from Knightstone Island. This is when you jump from a high spot into the water.

One of the biggest risks with tombstoning is not knowing what’s hidden beneath the water, and potentially hitting the rocks.

The depth of the water at Knightstone Island dramatically changes with the tides. Even for experienced swimmers, it can be very difficult to tell how deep the water really is.

Watch our video to learn more about the dangers of tombstoning from Knightstone Island.

Just one jump risks death or life-changing injuries. It’s never worth the risk.

Knightstone slipway

Personal powered watercraft may only be launched from the slipway at Knightstone Island. You will need a permit to do this.

For more information, see the licences and permits section of our website.
