Analysis of Additional Needs (AANT)

Analysis of Additional Needs Tool (AANT) is the first stage of an Educational Psychologist’s (EP) assess-plan-do-review process.

It is a chance for education professionals to work together with an Educational Psychologist to explore a child or young person’s (the learner) strengths and needs. This done using a video consultation.

AANT is primarily designed for early intervention and support of children and young people aged 0 to 18 in any educational setting.

How it can help

AANT can help by:

  • giving a professional quick support from an EP
  • supporting early identification of needs and providing support before these needs escalate
  • providing a report that can be shared with anyone working with the learner

A single AANT can have a wide impact in schools and settings because the strategies and ideas can work for other students too.

Stages of the AANT

  1. The learner’s parent/carer gives digital consent and contributes their views.
  2. The education professional [NC1] completes an online questionnaire about the leaner’s development.
  3. A video consultation is arranged by an EP to discuss the child or young person’s needs and the next steps.
  4. A summary report of the discussion is created which links to resources for support and can be downloaded.

If you work in an educational setting

An AANT is an opportunity for you to collaborate with an EP and a learner to examine the learner’s strengths and needs. There are several stages to the process.

  • The learner’s parent/carer gives permission for the AANT to take place and adds their own views. This can be done online with a paper forms or meeting.
  • A more comprehensive online questionnaire is filled out. You can fill this out, or anyone who knows the learner well. It will ask about:
    • emotional and social skills
    • attention, motivation, and engagement
    • speech, language, and social communication
    • physical skills
    • learning
    • sleep
    • healthy lifestyle
    • sensory needs
  • An EP contacts you quickly to arrange an online video consultation. This lasts around 45 minutes. It will involve an in-depth discussion of the learner’s needs. It may also include next steps on how to provide support, based on the information provided. In most cases, only the EP and educational professional are present. Parents/carers can join in if it would be helpful.
  • After the consultation, a report is made available to download. It will contain a concise summary of your discussion, and links to resources.
