The Wessex Regional Flood and Coastal Committee (RFCC) helps to plan and fund work that reduces flood and coastal erosion risk across the Wessex region.
The committee brings together:
- representatives from local councils
- independent members
- the Environment Agency.
Together, they make sure investment in flood and coastal risk management is coordinated, fair and effective.
What the committee does
The Wessex RFCC:
- agrees regional priorities for flood and coastal erosion risk management
- supports projects that protect homes, businesses and the environment
- helps shape Environment Agency programmes and funding decisions
- agrees the local levy, which is the local contribution to regional flood work.
The committee was created by section 22 of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010. Its rules are set out in the Regional Flood and Coastal Committees (England and Wales) Regulations 2011.
The Wessex region
The committee covers:
- North Somerset
- Somerset
- Bath and North East Somerset
- Wiltshire
- Dorset
- Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole
- parts of Hampshire and Gloucestershire.
Our role
North Somerset Council is a full member of the Wessex RFCC.
We work with partners to make sure that local needs and priorities are represented - including coastal adaptation, drainage, and community resilience.
We also contribute to the local levy on behalf of North Somerset residents. This helps fund projects that do not receive national flood defence funding but are still important for local protection and adaptation.
