NHS Health Checks

The NHS Health Check is a free, evidence-based programme aimed at adults aged 40 to 74 years. It helps to prevent heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia. It involves simple measurements and lifestyle questions followed by tailored advice.

GP practices play a vital role in early detection and prevention, supporting people to manage their risk factors before serious illness develops. The programme helps to reduce health inequalities, improve population health and empowers individuals to take proactive steps towards healthier living.

Smoking cessation service

The smoking cessation service aims to provide tailored support to help people quit smoking. It combines evidence-based behavioural advice with access to stop smoking aids to increase the chances of quitting for good.

GP practices play a vital role in delivering smoking cessation interventions as part of wider public health efforts in North Somerset. Supporting people to quit smoking not only improves individual health outcomes but also helps to reduce health inequalities and the burden of smoking-related diseases across communities.

Sexual health services

Part A: Long‑Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)

This service aims to increase choice and access to all contraception methods for women in North Somerset. It will promote LARC as a cost-effective means of contraception.

The GP practices offering this service will provide the fitting, monitoring and removal of intra-uterine devices and sub-dermal implants that are licensed for use in the UK and in line with the best current practice guidelines.

Part B: chlamydia and gonorrhoea testing

This service aims to reduce the incidence of long-term health complications associated with untreated chlamydia and gonorrhoea in women. It will increase access to asymptomatic screening of chlamydia and gonorrhoea in women aged 16 to 24.
