A38 engagement events

In 2021, we ran a full public consultation on preliminary designs for the A38 MRN. This helped to inform the scheme designs agreed by the Department for Transport in the outline business case (OBC).

We will be giving you more opportunities to see maps and plans for each upgrade to the A38. These will be available in the lead up to submission of the full business case to the Department for Transport.

We will shortly be announcing the details of a drop-in public information session where you can see plans for the A38 MRN in large format. You can also ask questions about the scheme to council officers and project contractors.

Anyone with an interest in the A38 MRN is welcome to come along to the event. You will be able to meet members of the project team along with representatives from Octavius.

Changes before submission of the full business case

The Department for Transport agreed the scope of the A38 MRN at the point of outline business case. They have funded development of the full business case based on those proposals.

This means changes to the A38 MRN are limited. Any designs outside of the OBC’s scope will not be funded by the Department for Transport.

The Department for Transport require all works to be within the A road boundary. There is not currently scope for further land to be added outside of the highway boundary.

Changes that can be implemented during detailed design include:

  • alterations to building material
  • signage
  • road lining
  • residual safety concerns
  • landscaping

Downside road scheme

Highway improvements proposed by the Downside Road scheme need to be delivered as part the Section 106 agreement. This is linked to Bristol Airport’s consent to expand to 12 million passengers per year.

For Downside Road there are design requirements within the Section 106 agreement that also needs to be met.
