From today, anyone wishing to visit the Weston‑super‑Mare recycling centre will need to book a time slot in advance. After a monitoring period at Weston-super-Mare, the council will look to extend the system to the Portishead and Backwell sites from Monday 2 March.
The new approach is designed to make visits faster, safer and more efficient for residents, while ensuring recycling centres can operate smoothly during busy periods and planned maintenance.
Cllr Annemieke Waite, Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment at North Somerset Council said: “Our aim is to make visiting the recycling centre as easy and efficient as possible for residents. Introducing a booking system helps restrict access to North Somerset residents only, reduce queues, cut unnecessary carbon emissions from idling vehicles, and make sure our sites are used safely and correctly.
“This brings us in line with neighbouring authorities who have already implemented successful booking systems, and we’re confident residents will see the benefits.”
The change is part of the council’s wider efforts to improve services, reduce waste and respond to the climate emergency. It supports commitments in North Somerset’s Waste Strategy and Climate Emergency Action Plan.
Why introduce a booking system?
The new system is designed to help:
- Reduce queues and congestion
- Cut carbon emissions form idling vehicles
- Make visits easier and quicker
- Ensure sites operate safely and efficiently
- Manage access during period of repair
- Prevent unauthorised use from outside the area
- Manage commercial and DIY waste appropriately
- Simplify vehicle permits for those who need them
How can residents book?
Residents can book a slot online at: https://n-somerset.hwrc.bookinglab.co.uk/
The link is also available via the North Somerset Council app.
Bookings can be made up to two weeks in advance, or as late as 10 minutes before a slot, if space is available. Residents will receive a confirmation email and reminder notifications ahead of their visit.
Bookings can also be made on behalf of someone else - for example, a friend, neighbour or family member who doesn’t have internet access. Telephone bookings will also be available via an automated service.
