Listed buildings

Listing is the term given to sites that have been designated of national historic interest, and have been marked for preservation and regeneration. Listing can apply to buildings, parks, monuments and archaeological sites.

In order to be given listed status, sites have to be approved by Historic England, and then added to the National Heritage List for England (NHLE).

Listing is identified based on the following criteria:

  • Architectural interest - of importance in craft or design
  • Historic interest - that illustrate the nation's cultural, economic or social history
  • Historic association - with important people or events
  • Group value - where buildings form part of an architectural ensemble

North Somerset holds a number of listed buildings and sites, including the Grand Pier, the Odeon Cinema, and Worlebury Camp.

To find out what buildings are listed in your area, search the NHLE on Historic England's website.

Notes on listings

When researching the National Heritage List, please note:

  • property names can change - check that the description is the correct one for the property you are searching
  • the whole building, inside and outside, is protected even if it is not mentioned in the listing
    • for additions made after 1 July 1948, boundary walls, railings, gates and garden features within the curtilage of the property are also protected.
