Bus lane enforcement

Drivers who use bus lanes in Weston-super-Mare without authorisation may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

Enforcement of bus lanes has the following benefits:

  • more free-flowing public transport due to fewer illegally parked or queuing vehicles
  • reduced journey times for public transport, encouraging more people to use services
  • safer roads with fewer accidents
  • improved highway management
  • consistency with neighbouring authorities

Area of enforcement

Four bus lanes in Weston-super-Mare are impacted. Those are:

  • two lanes at Queensway bus terminus, Worle - entrance from Commercial way (near McDonalds) and Queensway
  • Locking Road - entrance opposite Red Admiral, west bound
  • Locking Road - entrance by the Odeon cinema, east bound

The lanes will be monitored using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera systems. The cameras will record breaches and automatically generate Parking Charge Notices (PCNs).

While other bus lanes may not have cameras at the moment those remain under review and should only be used by the appropriate vehicles.

Penalty charge notices

A PCN will be £70, or £35 if paid within 21 days.

The scheme will operate under a short warning notice period for first-time offenders while the new enforcement comes into effect.

Authorised vehicles

The following vehicles only are permitted to use the bus lanes included in the enforcement scheme:

  • Queensway bus terminus: local buses, emergency vehicles and pre-authorised vehicles on an exemption list
  • Locking Road, entrance opposite Red Admiral, west bound: buses, coaches, minibuses, emergency vehicles, and pre-authorised vehicles on an exemption list. Taxi (Hackney carriages) must only access via the dedicated marked Taxi lane and must leave the area by heading west towards the Odeon only. No right or U turn is allowed from the Taxi lane into the bus area.
  • Locking Road, entrance by Odeon, east bound: Buses, coaches, minibuses, emergency vehicles and pre-authorised vehicles on an exemption list

All bus lanes are in operation 24 hours at all times and all days including bank holidays.
