Bus lane enforcement

Drivers who use bus lanes in North Somerset without pre-authorisation or exemption may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

Enforcement of bus lanes has the following benefits:

  • more free-flowing public transport due to fewer illegally parked or queuing vehicles
  • reduced journey times for public transport, encouraging more people to use services
  • safer roads with fewer accidents
  • improved highway management
  • consistency with neighbouring authorities

Area of enforcement

Weston-super-Mare:

  • two lanes at Queensway bus terminus, Worle - entrance from Commercial way (near McDonalds) and Queensway
  • Locking Road - entrance opposite Red Admiral, west bound
  • Locking Road - entrance via Walliscote Road, east bound

Major A Roads

  • A38, Bridgewater Road – at junction of Barrow Street, Barrow Gurney
  • A370, Main Road – at junction of Brockley Lane and Brockley Combe Road

The lanes will be monitored using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera systems. The cameras will record contraventions and will be reviewed by an Officer, before issuing a Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs).

While other bus lanes may not have cameras at the moment those remain under review and should only be used by the appropriate vehicles.

Penalty Charge Notices

A PCN will be £70, or £35 if paid within 21 days.

Each new scheme will operate under a 6 month warning notice period for first-time offenders while the new enforcement comes into effect.
