Information and support for victims of crime
North Somerset YJS offers information and support to victims of crimes by children.
Our aim is to prevent and reduce offending by children in our area and we believe that the best way to do this is by ensuring that children understand the harm their behaviour has caused, take responsibility for their actions and attempt to make amends to the victim and/or the community.
Restorative justice
Restorative justice is an approach that focuses on repairing the harm caused by crime.
Taking part in restorative processes allows you to:
- tell your side of the story
- get answers to your questions
- help the child to understand the impact of their actions
- help the child to put right some of the harm they have caused
- encourage the child not to cause any more harm in the future
Your involvement is totally voluntary and your details will be kept confidential.
What are the options?
There are a number of ways in which you may choose to take part in a restorative process:
- a face-to-face conference with the child responsible for the harm, providing an opportunity for a meaningful conversation and mutual understanding.
- indirect mediation, where communication is facilitated between you and the child, through a third party, without direct contact, to exchange views and feelings.
- a letter of apology from the child, apologising and taking responsibility for their actions.
- in addition, there may be the opportunity for the child to complete reparation work in the community. This could involve contributing to a charity or organisation that is meaningful to you.
If you're interested in learning more about these options, your Victim Liaison Officer (VLO) is available to discuss them with you in more detail.
What you can expect
If you choose to share your thoughts and feelings with us, we will ensure that these are heard and form part out of our decision making throughout the child's time with the service.
We are here to listen, help and keep you informed. If you feel that additional support would be beneficial, we can also signpost you to relevant services or complete referrals on your behalf.
