Registering a stillbirth

Parents can register a stillbirth as soon as they feel able to. Contact us for advice or to make an appointment.

If the parents are married to each other either parent can register the still birth. If the parents are not married to each other and you would like the father’s details to be included on the register, both parents can visit us to complete the registration.

If one parent is unable to attend but they would like their details included, they will need to make a declaration acknowledging their paternity or maternity which the other parent will need to bring with them when they visit us.

Required information

To register a stillbirth please bring the paperwork that the doctor or midwife has given you. You’ll also need to let us know

  • date and place of the stillbirth
  • full name of the child
  • full name, date of birth, occupation, addresses and place of birth of the parents

If you want to give your child a name, you must do this when you register as a name cannot be given or changed at a later stage.

Once you have registered we’ll give you a certificate and paperwork for the funeral director.

When a stillbirth happens outside North Somerset we can help and pass information on to the relevant office.
