Registering a stillbirth

Parents can register a stillbirth as soon as they feel able to. Contact us for advice or to make an appointment.

If the parents are married to each other either parent can register the still birth. If the parents are not married to each other and you would like the father’s details to be included on the register, both parents must attend to complete the registration.

If one parent is unable to attend but they would like their details included please contact us for further information.

Required information

The doctor or midwife will forward the Medical Certificate of Stillbirth directly to the Registration Service.

At the appointment we will ask you

  • the date and place of the stillbirth
  • the full name of the child
  • the full name, date of birth, occupation, addresses and place of birth of the parents

If you want to give your child a name, you must do this when you register as a name cannot be given or changed at a later stage.

Once you have registered we’ll give you a certificate, and ask you for details of the funeral director.

When a stillbirth happens outside North Somerset you can register by declaration and we will forward the information on to the relevant office.
