North Somerset Council’s seafront rangers have produced two safety videos focusing on water safety.
The first video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljZs_G_cbvU&t=3s) shows how quickly things can change out in the sea and features a staged rescue of a dummy stuck in the mud.
Another video highlights the dangers of tombstoning – jumping from a high spot into water – from Knightstone Island (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kyxL6D5uis).
To stay safe at Weston’s seafront, people are asked to follow these tips:
- check the weather forecast and tide times (https://n-somerset.gov.uk/my-services/libraries-leisure-open-spaces/beaches-coast/tide-times) before heading out
- bring a charged mobile phone with you
- don’t walk into the mud when the tide is out – you might get stuck
- know where the exit points are on the beach
- follow advice on the warning signs
- if you do get trapped – or see someone else who’s stuck – call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
Cllr Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for Weston seafront said: “Our beautiful seafront offers a perfect day out in the summer holidays.
"Our Seafront rangers patrol Weston-super-Mare’s beach every day, and they work closely with other emergency services, such as the Coastguard, RNLI and Avon Fire & Rescue Service, to help keep everyone safe.
“We would urge people to respect the fact that we have the second highest tidal range in the world and follow our advice at all times.”
Other information about seafront safety, such as parking, warning signs, lost children and first aid, is available on the council’s website (https://n-somerset.gov.uk/my-services/libraries-leisure-open-spaces/beaches-coast/seafront-safety).
Visitors to the seafront are also asked to leave only footprints and use the bins provided or take their rubbish and recycling home if possible.
