This week North Somerset libraries are taking part in Green Libraries Week (27 Oct – 2 Nov), celebrating sustainability, creativity, and community learning.

Coinciding with October half-term, this year’s celebrations feature a mix of fun and educational events designed to inspire families to think about the environment and how everyone can all look to make small changes that can create a big difference - together.

Activities across North Somerset libraries include:

  • LEGO Environmental Challenges: Families can enjoy creative play with Lego and take on one of three challenge cards, each exploring how to protect animals and their habitats.
  • Portishead Library: Pop-up Green Libraries Week Storytime – Friday 31 October, 11am. A free, nature-themed story session for children ages 3+.
  • All libraries: Go Green Rhyme Time – Wiggle, jump and sing along to eco-friendly songs in pop-up rhyme time sessions throughout half-term.
  • Pill Library: Spooky Hallow-Green Rhyme Time – Friday 31 October, 9.30-10am. Fancy dress encouraged! Enjoy spooky stories and rhymes with a green twist.
  • The Campus Library, Weston-Super-Mare: Sustainability Showcase – seed swap, colouring on recycled materials, mystery book lucky dip, and displays of sustainability-themed books.
Helping Households Save Energy

As part of Green Libraries Week, North Somerset Council’s Energy Efficiency Roadshows will visit several libraries across the district, offering free advice and practical tips for saving energy at home.

In addition, the popular thermal imaging cameras are back and available to borrow once again from all North Somerset libraries.

These easy-to-use cameras help residents identify where heat is escaping from their homes, such as around windows, doors, or letterboxes. Borrowers can book a camera for one week and find out more on the council’s website.

Cllr Mike Solomon, Cabinet Member for Culture, Community Services and Safety at North Somerset Council said: “Green Libraries Week is all about celebrating how libraries can support sustainable living and help families learn together. From interactive activities to energy-saving tools, we’re showing that small, practical steps can help make a big impact.”

Each library's full events listing will be shared on North Somerset Libraries social media channels. Residents are encouraged to check out their local library or visit the North Somerset Council library events page for more information.
