New disabled access lift unveiled at Weston Playhouse

North Somerset Council have completed works to fit a new disabled access lift at the Playhouse in Weston-super-Mare, finished in time for the summer season.

The lift replaces the old chairlift system and was chosen for its strength and durability, ensuring all guests can enjoy the theatre whatever their needs.

After two months hard work to fit the facilities into a structurally complicated building, the lift has elevated accessibility at the venue and is already proving a success with the local Disabled Access Group.

Steve Ledbrook, Chair of North Somerset Councils Disabled Access Group said: “We are delighted and excited with the new wheelchair accessible lift that’s been installed at the Playhouse Theatre in Weston-Super-Mare.  The Disabled Access Group want to thank everyone involved for their hard work to make this happen. We have worked with North Somerset Council on this project with giving advice and solution ideas. Members of the group are now looking forward to seeing regular performances once again.

“Being a powered wheelchair user myself, I have missed being able to enjoy the theatre. To be able to now independently access this venue and enjoy entertainment like everyone else is so important.

“The Disabled Access Group (DAG) hope for many years of enjoying the magic of live performances and to continually work with the council to improve access for disabled people across North Somerset”

Councillor Mike Solomon, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “The new disabled access lift offers a long-term solution to the Playhouse’s accessibility needs and is vital improvement for guests and carers who require a lift to watch the exciting acts and shows on offer.

“The Playhouse is a cornerstone of our cultural offer and I hope the lift will encourage more people to visit the theatre and experience what’s on this summer and beyond.”

The construction has seen the removal of a single stairwell to install the lift and new carpet has been provided in the front of house in partnership with the Friends of the Playhouse.

North Somerset Council is marking Disability Pride Month this July. You can read more about Disability Pride Month activities or to learn about how you can get involved with the Disabled Access Group on the North Somerset Council website.
