More litterbugs and irresponsible dog owners fined in North Somerset

North Somerset Council has demonstrated its commitment to deliver a cleaner and greener local environment by taking action against those who breach Public Space Protection Orders.

39 people have been ordered to pay over £16,000 in fines as a result of prosecutions by the council heard at North Somerset Magistrates Court on Friday 17 March, Friday 14 April and Friday 12 May.

34 of the charges brought were for littering by dropping a cigarette, three charges were for walking a dog off lead in an area where dogs must be on leads, and two charges were for having a dog in an exclusion zone.

Total fines ranged from £156 to £508 depending on means and whether a guilty plea was entered. North Somerset Council were awarded costs in all cases.

Each person had been given a fixed penalty notice for £75 and sent at least one reminder letter but failed to pay.

The following three people were found guilty of walking a dog off lead in an area where dogs must be on leads: Kevin Lewis of Turtlegate Avenue, Bristol; Emily Maya of Sussex Place, Plymouth; and John Thatcher of Glebe Road, Weston-super-Mare.

The following two people were found guilty of having a dog in an exclusion zone: Anna Jane of George Street, Weston-super-Mare; and Leigh Rogers of Wilton Crescent, Weston-super-Mare.

Councillor James Clayton, North Somerset Council's Executive Member for Safety in the community, said: “Robust enforcement of the PSPOs is a key part of the action we are taking to clean up our local area for everyone to enjoy and make North Somerset a greener place to be. We hope our partnership with Local Authority Support and enforcement of the PSPOs will lead to a reduction of overall offending.

“It’s disappointing to see so many offenders from Weston-super-Mare and I hope that this changes. We’ll continue to heavily publicise our PSPOs, and previous convictions. There really is no excuse."
