Look after your neighbours as temperatures drop this week

North Somerset Council is urging everyone to look after vulnerable family, friends and neighbours this week after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Met Office issued a level three cold weather alert.

Severe cold temperatures leading to widespread ice and frost are expected to hit much of the UK this week. A level three cold weather alert is in place between 6pm Wednesday (7 December) and 9am Monday (12 December).

Road crews will be out gritting roads to keep North Somerset moving and local help and support is available for anyone struggling to keep warm after increasing energy bills.

There are now over 65 Community Living Rooms (warm spaces) across North Somerset where anyone is welcome to visit to keep warm. To find your nearest location, visit www.n-somerset.gov.uk/livingrooms

North Somerset Council’s welfare provision scheme can also give short-term financial help in a crisis and can help pay for gas/electricity, food, clothing, travel and more. Applications for short-term financial help is available via the welfare provision scheme at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/wps.

Cllr Mike Bell, Deputy Leader of North Somerset Council said: “With the weather expected to turn much colder this week, we’re urging everyone to look out for vulnerable neighbours, family and friends and check they have enough supplies (including medicines) and are able to keep warm.  Please tell them about Community Living Rooms which are available across North Somerset and help them find their nearest location.

“For anyone struggling to pay their energy bills, Citizens Advice North Somerset can help. They offer help and advice if you are worried about an energy bill, having problems topping up your prepayment meter, have been told your energy supply will be disconnected or want to know how to get extra support from your energy provider. We are all in this together and local help is available.”

Top tips to prepare for colder weather:

  • Look out for friends and family who may be vulnerable to the cold and ensure they have access to warm food, drinks and are managing to heat their homes adequately.
  • Remember to visit your pharmacist and stock up on sufficient necessary medicines to avoid unnecessary trips during the next week
  • Stay tuned for weather forecasts and take the weather into account when planning your activity over the following days.
  • Avoid exposing yourself to cold or icy outdoor conditions if you are at a higher risk of cold related illness or falls.
  • Discuss with friends and neighbours about any snow/ice in front of your house and public walkways nearby, if you are unable to clear these yourself.
