Placemaking and culture

Cultural placemaking puts culture, heritage and creativity at the heart of local and regional placemaking and regeneration planning. This approach fosters pride in where we live and helps to bring life back into our town centres.

Extensive community consultation formed a strategy and vision for Weston incorporating a thriving arts, culture and heritage sector. Key to achieving this, and recognised by the government, is cultural placemaking.

We have been supporting culture since 2018:

  • firstly in developing the Culture Weston initiative bringing numerous activities into the town every year
  • secondly in utilising support from the Arts Council’s Priority Place status to help secure a future for the Tropicana.

Other joint council and Arts Council objectives are to support cultural hubs across North Somerset, increase cultural engagement and advocate the role of culture in placemaking.

We are also a partner in the West of England Cultural Compact which develops strategic cultural projects across the region including those relating to placemaking.

To maximise further cultural opportunities for North Somerset, the placemaking team continue to work in partnership with the Arts Council and the West of England Cultural Compact.
