North Somerset Council and Portishead Town Council are working together to deliver a shared vision for the Lake Grounds which is to provide a regionally renowned park which is attractive, fun, safe and biodiverse park that visitors of all ages can enjoy and be proud of.
A consultation took place earlier this year, asking what people think of the park and what the priorities for improvements should be. More than 1,000 responses were received.
72 per cent, almost three quarters, of those who took part already had a positive opinion about the Lake Grounds. 89 per cent liked that the park is good for health and wellbeing.
Responses showed the top priority for people is to dredge the lake. This is followed by improving the toilet facilities, improving the play area and rewilding part of the lake.
A large number of people, over 300, also said they would be interested in being involved or volunteering in future.
Cllr Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council's Executive Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Services, said: “As part of our Great Lakes project, we’re investing £700,000 to help improve our three great North Somerset coastal lakes at Clevedon, Weston-super-Mare and the Lake Grounds, Portishead.
“The responses to this consultation have helped us find out more about what people think of the park and where we need to prioritise our funding, so we can make sure the money is spent to improve the park in ways the community supports.”
Paul Gardner, Vice-chairman of Portishead Town Council added: “ A huge thank you to all those who contributed to the Lake Grounds consultation which has given us a clear view of people’s investment priorities. We are pleased to continue working in partnership with North Somerset Council on this project to deliver improvements to the Lake Grounds.”
North Somerset Council and Portishead Town Council will use the results of the consultation to update the Lake Grounds management and investment plan and allocate funding for the highest priorities. The next stage will be to develop plans further and additional funding, from grants, other organisations or fundraising, will also be sought.
