A public exhibition showcasing the finalists and winners of an innovative carbon neutral art competition will begin touring public spaces around North Somerset this week, starting in Nailsea library.

North Somerset Council ran the Picture This art competition in partnership with Culture Weston, to invite local people of all ages to imagine a carbon neutral future where the worst impacts of climate change have been prevented.

Following a successful launch at Weston’s Sovereign Centre last month, the Picture This art exhibition will be displayed around North Somerset until April, in public spaces including the libraries in Nailsea, Clevedon, Portishead and Yatton, plus at the Campus and the For All Healthy Living Centre in Weston-super-Mare.

Artworks submitted to the Picture This competition included poems, textiles, photographs, musical performance, paintings, screen prints and drawings. The winning artworks have now been selected, based on their creativity and ability to engage people in thinking about a net zero carbon future.

Maisie, aged 11, won the Under 16s category with her hand-drawn poster explaining all the different ways we can do our bit to reduce emissions. Scarlett, aged 17, won the 16s and Over category with her painting of Mother Nature holding the world. The People’s Choice Award went to 5-year-old Belle for her painting of a colourful rainbow scene.

Cllr Bridget Petty, Executive Member with responsibility for the climate emergency, said: “Picture This was an opportunity for people in North Somerset, particularly our younger residents, to think about the benefits of tackling climate change to create a better world for the future.

“The entrants created such a variety of exciting, inspiring artworks. My hope is that the touring exhibition will encourage more people to focus on what is possible to achieve a healthier, happier, more connected and greener future for North Somerset.”

Culture Weston is a partnership-led initiative that places culture at the heart of Weston-super-Mare’s daily life and future growth. It is led by North Somerset arts organisation Theatre Orchard, in collaboration with North Somerset Council, Arts Council England and the local community.
