The scheme, which covers 15 streets in the town centre, gives priority to permit holders during its hours of operation and has been designed to help residents, commuters, business customers and other vehicles share parking spaces more fairly.
It is hoped that the pilot scheme can help manage traffic and congestion, making the roads safer and improving air quality.
The parking scheme pilot will be operational on Monday 16 February. Once it is in place, North Somerset Council will monitor how well the scheme manages parking and will make necessary adjustments and alterations if needed.
Three types of resident permit are available, one providing parking in on-street bays, one providing parking in Locking Road long stay car park and another providing parking in both locations. Separate business and customer permits are also available. Permits are only available to residents living in or businesses based in the scheme area.
Councillor Mike Bell, Leader of North Somerset Council, said: “The roads can get particularly busy close to the centre of Weston-super-Mare, with vehicles often parked nose to tail and people driving around looking for a space.
“It is hoped that our Resident Parking Scheme pilot will help vehicles share available parking spaces on these fifteen busy streets in Weston-super-Mare. This is important in helping local residents park near their homes, whilst balancing this with the needs of local businesses and staff who need to park close to work.
“The scheme is a pilot and we will be looking at it closely to see how well it works. If the pilot proves successful and we start to see a real difference on some of our busiest streets, our ambition is to look at more locations where we could introduce parking schemes for the benefit of our residents and our towns.”
Councillor Robert Payne, ward member for Weston-super-Mare Central, added: “By offering permits to both residents and businesses, we are able to manage available parking spaces for local people. Not only does this include those living on the streets within the pilot, but it also includes new options for residents’ visitors and also for businesses to manage staff and customer parking. This is important as we look to create a fairer balance in the availability of parking spaces.”
Residents only parking bays will operate Monday to Saturday 8am to 7pm. All types of parking permit for the Residents Parking Scheme are available to purchase online. Residents permit holders will also be able to purchase visitors permit allocations for use when required.
