Nearly all young people in North Somerset will today (Wednesday 1 March) be offered to attend one of their top three preferred secondary schools from this September.

Out of the 2,528 secondary school applications received by North Somerset Council, figures released today show 99.01 per cent were offered one of their top three choices, with over 95 per cent of applicants allocated a place at their first preference.

From applications received for the 2023/24 academic year by the national closing date in October 2022, the council will make offers to all who applied this national offer day. Figures show:

  • First preference met – 95.45 per cent (2,413 applications)
  • Second preference – 3.09 per cent (78 applications)
  • Third preference – 0.47 per cent (12 applications)

Only 25 students out of 2,528 have not been offered any of their preferences. However, all those who applied for their local school were offered a place.

Parents who applied for places online will receive their outcome by email today, while those who applied using hardcopy forms will receive their offer by post in the coming days.

Councillor Catherine Gibbons, North Somerset Council’s executive member with responsibility for children and young people, said: “I’m delighted that so many of our young people have received a place at one of their preferred secondary schools.

“Processing more than 2,500 applications, and matching children to their preferences, is a huge challenge. I’d like to thank council officers and our schools for working incredibly hard to achieve these positive results.

“From this September, these young people will start their new adventure as a year 7 in one our many fantastic secondary schools. I wish them all the very best on the next chapter of their school life.”

Parents and carers of children not offered one of their top three secondary school preferences can appeal the decision. This is more likely to occur when parents and carers choose not to submit three preferences, including their local school. More information about the appeal process can be found at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/schooladmissions

Parents who have applied for places for children starting school in September 2023 or moving from Infant to Junior or First to Middle school, will receive their outcomes in April.
