Nearly all young people in North Somerset will today (Tuesday 16 April) be offered a place at one of their top three primary schools from this September.

This year North Somerset Council received 2,023 primary school applications. Figures released today reveal that 99.36 per cent were offered one of their top three schools, with over 97 per cent of applicants receiving their first choice.

Today the council will make offers to everyone who applied for the 2024/25 academic year by the national closing date in January. Figures show:

  • First preference met – 97.38 per cent (1,970 applications)
  • Second preference – 1.98 per cent (40 applications)
  • Third preference – 0 per cent (0 applications)

Only 13 children out of 2,023 were not offered any of their preferences. This is more likely to occur when parents and carers choose not to submit three preferences, including their local school. However, all those who applied for their local school were offered a place.

Parents who applied for places online will receive their outcome by email today. Anyone who applied using hardcopy forms will receive their offer by either email or post in the coming days.

Councillor Catherine Gibbons, North Somerset Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Children’s Services, Families and Lifelong Learning, said: “It’s fantastic that more than 99 per cent of our young people in North Somerset will have the opportunity to study at one of their top-three primary schools. Starting school is an exciting milestone, and I wish all our young learners the best of luck.

“This result wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of our council officers and schools, who process thousands of applications. I’d like to thank them again for their dedication.”

Parents and carers of children not offered their preferred school can appeal the decision. More information about the appeal process can be found at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/schooladmissions
