North Somerset Council Leader Cllr Mike Bell has congratulated Helen Godwin who was successfully elected yesterday (Thursday 1 May) as the new Mayor of the West of England.

The West of England Combined Authority Area covers the local authority areas of Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset (BANES) and South Gloucestershire and is tasked with overseeing public transport, the environment, housing plans, training and job opportunities and supporting businesses.

North Somerset Council has a strong relationship with the West of England Combined Authority working closely together to boost the local economy, deliver a joint Bus Service Improvement Plan and delivering the MetroWest Phase 1 project, which proposes to re-open the Portishead to Bristol rail line.

Cllr Mike Bell, Leader of North Somerset Council said: “I’d like to congratulate the West of England’s newly elected Mayor, Helen Godwin. I’m looking forward to working closely together to make a real and lasting difference and wish her all the very best as she starts her new role.

“We are already delivering together a number of key projects such as bus service improvements, progressing the much-awaited MetroWest Portishead to Bristol railway line and boosting the local economy. Together, we will explore even more exciting opportunities which will bring real benefit to our region.”

Cllr Catherine Gibbons, Deputy Leader of the Council added: “I’m delighted to offer Helen Godwin my congratulations on winning the election. Very exciting times ahead! I look forward to working closely with Helen and everyone at the West of England Combined Authority Area to benefit all residents across our areas.

“We are also keen to progress discussions on North Somerset Council joining the West of England combined authority, which paused in the run up to the election. The West of England Combined Authority remain our preferred devolution partner due to shared economic geography and already established cultural and transport links. Becoming part of the Combined Authority with the right deal and following consultation with our residents and businesses will, we believe, bring real benefits to us all.”
