New transport hub planned for Pill

Plans for a new transport hub in Pill, North Somerset, are moving forward with works set to start early January 2026.

Construction works are due to be completed in March, bringing a range of improvements to the precinct and nearby bus stops that will benefit residents, visitors and local businesses.

The new hub will focus on making the area more comfortable, welcoming and easier to use. On Heywood Road, existing bus shelters will be replaced with new ones, while the precinct will gain a larger shelter with seating, lighting and a living roof. Real-time travel information screens will also be installed so passengers can see when their bus is due.

We’ve been working closely with Alliance Homes to enhance the precinct. The area will be revitalised with new paving, planting, and additional seating, as well as a community noticeboard for local information. Alliance Homes, who own the precinct, are contributing towards the paving improvements. Safety and accessibility will also be upgraded through a new crossing point, wider and realigned footways, and an improved bus stop area outside the precinct.

Existing bollards will be removed and replaced with stainless-steel versions, including drop-down bollards to allow space for market days.

The Pill hub is one of several small transport hubs being introduced across North Somerset. Many passengers are already enjoying better waiting facilities at the recently completed Weston Hospital hub, which has shown how these upgrades can make everyday journeys more pleasant.

Cllr Hugh Malyan, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at North Somerset Council, said: “The new transport hub in Pill is about making everyday journeys better for local people. By improving waiting areas, accessibility and connections, we’re helping residents feel more confident using public transport and creating a more welcoming space at the heart of the community.”

The works in Pill are part of a wider programme of transport improvements across North Somerset, including upgrades to around 150 bus stops and shelters, larger transport hubs in key towns, better links to the Portishead to Bristol rail line, and a new railway station in Pill reconnecting the village to the national rail network. The programme also aims to deliver more affordable fares and more reliable services.

The transport hub improvements are fully funded by the UK Government through the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) and support North Somerset Council’s ambition to create a well-connected, accessible and sustainable public transport network for everyone.
