A popular road junction in Weston-super-Mare will have a new pedestrian crossing added and its traffic lights refurbished next month as part of North Somerset Council's ongoing roads maintenance programme.

Work will be carried out at the junction of Beach Road and Clarence Road North in Weston-super-Mare. A new pedestrian crossing will be added on Beach Road and the lights and signal controllers will all be updated.

Cllr Steve Hogg, North Somerset Council’s Executive Member for Highways and Transport said: "We have a year-round programme of investment work on our roads, and this project will also enable us to improve the safety for people crossing between the seafront and Clarence Park at this popular spot."

Cllr Mike Bell, Deputy Leader of the Council and local ward member added: "I am pleased that as part of routine maintenance works to the signals we are able to add a pedestrian-controlled crossing. Beach Road can be busy, especially during seafront events, and this crossing will I am sure be welcomed by local residents."

The work will start on Monday 6 March and is expected to last for three weeks. Temporary signals will be in place allowing pedestrians to cross the road safely. There may be some queuing while the work is carried out, but contractors will do their best to keep this to a minimum.

The total cost of the work is £60,000 and it will be carried out by Yunex Traffic, North Somerset Council's maintenance contractor for traffic signals.
