Icescape set to return to Weston this winter

The largest outdoor, covered ice rink in the country is set to return to Weston-super-Mare this winter following an agreement reached between North Somerset Council and Icescape.

After a three-year break, the Tropicana will once again host the festive attraction from Tuesday 7 November 2023 to Sunday 7 January 2024.

There’s space for 400 skaters in each 45 minute skate session on the ice, with various sessions running throughout the day. These include the popular Parents and Toddlers, Quiet and Disco sessions. A number of other activities will run alongside the skating, including rides, as well as festive food and drink stalls.

Councillor Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council's executive member whose portfolio includes leisure, said: "We’re delighted to be welcoming Icescape back to the Tropicana. This will once again see Weston become the region’s festive ice-skating capital. Weston last hosted Icescape in 2019. That year, over 120,000 visitors flocked through its doors, travelling from all over the south west of England and beyond.”

Councillor Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council’s executive member responsible for placemaking and economy, said: “Icescape is a major attraction. The announcement that it’s returning this winter is positive news for the town, North Somerset and our local economy. This is the cherry on top of a busy summer in Weston-super-Mare. This is thanks to a strong events programme including Café Mambo on the Beach, Whirligig, Heritage Open Days, Pride later this month and Oktoberfest next month. It’s great to see so many more residents and visitors coming into the town.

“The transformation of the Tropicana as an all-year-round entertainment venue with increased capacity is a key part of our placemaking strategy for the town.  We see this as a key element of our work to deliver improvement using the £23m funding we secured from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ Levelling Up Fund. We look forward to announcing more on our plans in the coming months.”

Jamie Dann, Icescape Operations Director, said: “The whole team at Icescape is really excited to be bringing back the ice rink to the Tropicana. Tickets will go on sale next month, so keep an eye out on our social media pages for updates and information. We can’t wait to see everyone back on the ice having lots of fun with family and friends this festive season!”
