Town and parish councils, charities, community and voluntary groups can register their interest in receiving free flowers for public displays next year by emailing the council’s natural environment team at natural.environment@n-somerset.gov.uk.
Each year, an email is sent to those who have registered in January giving them the opportunity to reserve up to 200 plants. These are allocated on a first-come-first-served-based. The plants are made available for collection from the Glendale depot in Weston-super-Mare in early June. Any uncollected plants are then re-allocated.
The scheme, which has been running for over a decade, is run by the council in partnership with its supplier Glendale.
Plant species are chosen to suit local climate and soil conditions. They are also grown in peat-free compost, in line with the council’s environmental objectives.
Councillor Mike Solomon, North Somerset Councill’s Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, said: "Every year town and parish councils, community groups and many volunteers take advantage of our popular free annual flower scheme to help them put on a fantastic floral show across North Somerset.
“Over the ten years that it’s been going, the scheme’s free flowers have been supplied to many Britain in Bloom award winning displays and this year, people will be able to enjoy them at local landmarks including Clevedon Pier, and in Weston’s floral clock.
“I’d encourage any new groups who perhaps weren’t aware that they could apply for free flowers to register in time for next year.”
