Families in North Somerset enjoy safer communities’ event

North Somerset Council recently hosted a ‘Safer Communities: Protecting our futures’ event at Ashcombe Children’s Centre for families and young people aged 0-19 (up to 25 with SEND) who live in North Somerset.

The event was free to attend and aimed to teach families and young people how to make safer choices within their community and show them what services are available.

Families also had the opportunity to take part in the immersive experience of the ‘drugs bus’, provided by Resilience Voyage, which allowed children to experience what it’s like to live in a prison cell and learn more on topics such as drugs and substance abuse. Organisations such as Avon and Somerset Police, Avon Fire and Rescue Service, St John Ambulance, Weston Ability Football Club and more exhibited on the day, offering workshops and activities for attendees to take part in.

The event was organised by the council’s Children’s Centres team and contributed towards the council’s vision of ensuring a safer environment and future for children and young people living in North Somerset.

Lots of organisations within the community came along on the day to provide stalls and activities.

Councillor Catherine Gibbons, North Somerset Council’s executive member for children’s services, families and lifelong learning, said: “The Safer Communities event was an excellent opportunity for families and young people to learn more about making safe choices within their community, learn new information and have fun whilst doing so. We want to make sure that all our children and young people get the very best start in life and running events like these are a fantastic way to showcase the wide range of support we have on offer.

“Thank you to all of the Children’s Centre team who helped to plan and organise this event, and to all the partners who exhibited. I hope that all the families and young people who attended enjoyed this fantastic event.”

This event was one of three Safer Community events that the Children’s Centres team will be organising, with two more events coming up next year. You can find out more information about these upcoming events by following the Children’s centre pages on social media.
