At last night’s North Somerset Council Annual Council Meeting, Cllr Peter Crew was elected as Chairperson of Council for the year ahead. Cllr Crew takes over from Cllr Wendy Griggs who has held the position for the past year.

Cllr Crew has served as an elected member of the Council for many years, having first been elected to represent the community in 1984. He represents the Weston-super-Mare South Worle ward. Speaking about his aspirations during his year chairing the Council, Cllr Crew said:

“My passion is supporting our local economy, so I am really looking forward in doing all I can to support local businesses in the coming year. Tourism is particularly close to my heart, and I also want to do all I can to help promote our newer businesses too.

“I am also really looking forward to meeting people from across North Somerset and doing all I can to promote the wonderful place we live in.”

Cllr Crew received the chains of office from outgoing Chair, Cllr Wendy Griggs, ward councillor for Yatton, at the meeting. Reflecting on her year in this important civic role, Cllr Griggs said:

“It has been such an enjoyable year for me as Chair and a privilege to represent the people of North Somerset. I have been involved in some wonderful civic events, supported charitable activities and have loved meeting so many people from across North Somerset. I have been involved in so many wonderful events it’s been hard to pick a highlight, but one event that will last in my memory for years to come would have to be the CBeebies carol event at the Winter Gardens last year – an absolute joy to see so many of our children getting involved.”

The chairperson is a non-political civic role. A councillor is chosen each year to represent the council at civic events and to promote the area. While in post the chairperson will raise money for charity. Anyone who would like the chairperson to attend a civic event should contact the chairperson's office at chairpersonofthecouncil@n-somerset.gov.uk or call 01934 634 902.
