A recruitment crisis has hit North Somerset’s hospitality and leisure businesses thanks to a perfect storm of Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic.

Local businesses are struggling to recruit enough staff to be able to open safely and provide a great experience for visitors as the peak summer season begins.

To help combat this, North Somerset Council has launched a new video showcasing local hospitality and leisure businesses talking about the many benefits of working in the sector – such as the wide variety of work, the rewarding nature of it, and the opportunity to progress up the career ladder.

Local businesses showcased in the short film include Mendip Activity Centre in Churchill, Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm in Wraxall and the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare.

Cllr Mark Canniford, executive member for placemaking and economy, said: “The pandemic has hit the hospitality industry harder than most and this latest problem feels cruelly ironic.

“As peak season is approaching, we wanted to highlight how much fun the industry can be and the fantastic opportunities there is for our local people.

“If anyone is interested in a job, please think of the hospitality industry. North Somerset needs you!”

Latest figures show there are currently 1.3 million job vacancies in the hospitality and leisure industry in the UK.
