Dangerous or unstable buildings are a threat to public safety, and need to be reported to our building control team.
If a building presents an urgent danger or threat to life, please call us immediately on the number below.
If a structure presents an immediate threat to public safety, the council has powers to take action. Costs for these actions will be recovered from the owner of the property.
In non-urgent circumstances, the council can serve the owner of an unsafe property with a court order requiring them to either demolish or make the structure safe again.
As a rule, we prefer to work with owners to remediate structures in an amicable way.
However, if the structure is listed or in a conservation area, the council's conservation powers will apply, which may or may not include a compulsory purchase order or other action.
